Mind/Body Relaxation Techniques for Expectant Mothers & Her Birth Partner Workshop with Marnie Memmolo
This workshop will be offered on the following dates:

  • Saturday, May 11th, 2013 ~ 2 - 4 PM
Workshop Fee = $30 single or $50 per couple.

Having a child is a major life changing event.  It is natural to fret about what you eat, drink, think, feel and do during pregnancy.  It is also perfectly normal to worry about whether your baby is healthy, how this new person will change your life and relationships, and whether you are truly up to the task of parenthood.  Pregnancy is also a busy time filled with preparations: creating a registry, decorating the nursery, making a birth plan, scheduling and attending childbirth classes, finding a pediatrician, what to do about your career and work-life balance once the baby arrives.  Radical physical changes to the body, normal pregnancy mood swings caused by changes and shifts in hormone levels, compounded by these thoughts, choices and preparations can be overwhelming and can leave even the most laid back woman totally stressed out.  The key is to take adequate steps to manage and cope with anxiety and stress so it doesn't become all-consuming and affect your day-to-day functioning.  This workshop will identify key stressors in your life, the importance of learning how to handle stress constructively during pregnancy, ways to limit your exposure to stress, and techniques to lessen your body's response to stress which is useful for anytime in your life, but expecially during pregnancy and beyond.  Techniques will include:

  • Basic Yoga Asana (Movement & Postures) designed to relieve tension from the body that can be used as labor coping techniques and pain management during labor.
  • Yoga Pranayama (Breathing Exercises) to help calm the mind
  • Guided Visualization to connect with one's growing baby inside
  • Affirmations & Mantra - how to create an affirmation or find a mantra and apply it to your daily life
  • Yoga Nidra means "dynamic yogic sleep" and is an inviting ancient practice that leads to inner freedom.  It can be practiced by everyone and all that is required is to lie down and listen.  It is a systematic method of complete relaxation and peace, not only for the physical body, but also for the deeper emotional and mental systems, to the root of stresses, allowing the release of subconscious tensions and tendencies that inhibit us from living to our full potential.  It brings us to a place of calm, quiet and clarity.  It is one of the deepest of all meditations, in fact goes beyond meditation, as our awareness is lead through all levels of being including body, mind and spirit, into a state of supreme stillness and insight.  This practice  is relaxing; however it takes us far beyond relaxation alone.  The ultimate intention of Yoga Nidra is to know our True Nature.

Movement & Positioning for Labor & Birth, Including "Dancing for Birth" Instruction
Why is movement so important for the laboring woman? TV seems to always depict women lying in bed struggling with labor.  Women who are upright and moving have reduced length of labor, and report much greater satisfaction with their labors and birth.

In this class we will practice movement and positions for labor and birth.  We will incorporate the fun and very effective skills of bellydancing and African dance to help facilitate optimal fetal positioning.  Through the combination of lecture and exercise you will gain the knowledge and ability to use these techniques during labor.  This class is intended to augment traditional childbirth education classes, and is beneficial to second time mothers who would like to build on their previous birth experience.

Classes will be led by ICEA certified Childbirth Educator and "Dancing for Birth" certified instructor, Jean Sheehy, owner of Birth Bliss.  For more information visit: www.birth-bliss.com

Workshop fee = $50 or class card plus $30
(includes hand-outs, snacks & beverages; birth partners are welcome to accompany & participate with expectant mother)
